Barcelona could sign Real Madrid first-teamer for first time in almost 30 years

Barcelona are reportedly in talks to sign Marco Asensio from bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Very few players dare to cross the divide between Spanish football’s two giants. One look at the reception Luis Figo received at the Camp Nou in 2000 following his controversial move to Los Blancos is enough to put even the most thick-skinned players off.

But with 27-year-old Asensio’s contract at the Santiago Bernabeu set to expire in the summer and a new deal yet to be agreed, we could be in for another ground-shaking transfer between the historic rivals.

SPORT claim the Blaugrana have held talks with Asensio over signing him on a free transfer. The forward is said to be unsatisfied with the reduced terms offered by Real, and is allowed to negotiate with other clubs.

A move from the capital to Catalonia would be the first time a player has done so since Luis Enrique in 1996. It also happened way back in history with Jose Canal and Lucien Muller.

Do you think Marco Asensio would leave Real Madrid for Barcelona? Let us know in the comments section.

Spain international Asensio was said to be "one step away" from signing for Barca when he was a youngster at RCD Mallorca. But Barca didn't want to pay the asking price, allowing Real Madrid to swoop in and sign him for €3.9million (£3.5m) in 2014, with tennis legend Rafa Nadal being instrumental in the deal.

Asensio has since gone on to win three La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues. But the playmaker has struggled to fulfil his once lofty potential since rupturing his ACL in 2019.

The playmaker has managed just one goal and three assists while featuring in 12 La Liga games this season, indicating that it may be time for a change in scenery.

Asked about his future recently, Asensio said: "The only thing I think about is Real Madrid, I'm happy there, but in the future you never know what can happen."
