Vieira to make Chelsea defender Marc Guehi third signing as new Palace boss

Patrick Vieira is set to make his third signing at Crystal Palace when £20m Chelsea defender Marc Guehi joins the club this week.

Guehi underwent a medical at Palace yesterday (Thursday) after agreeing a five-year contract with the Eagles.

Chelsea were reluctant to lose Guehi, who is regarded as a huge prospect, but the England Under 21 international wanted regular first-team football.

Guehi joins goalkeeper Remi Matthews and Reading teen Michael Olise as Vieira’s new recruits, with more expected before the transfer window shuts.

As part of the deal, Chelsea have negotiated a sell-on clause for Guehi and the right to match the terms of any future sale.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Swansea, who reached the Championship play-off final.

Guehi potentially plugs a big hole for Palace, who are not expected to offer Scott Dann a new contract and have yet to re-sign Gary Cahill.

Former Arsenal and France star Vieira is expected to work with a much younger squad at Selhurst Park next season.

And he is keen to make more signings as well as promote a promising group of homegrown youngsters.

Vieira added former Manchester City youth coach Kristian Wilson to his backroom team yesterday as first-team coach.

Wilson, who has joined the team on their training camp at St. George's Park, worked with Vieira at the Etihad and followed him to New York City and OGC Nice.
