Tottenham are reportedly back in the picture to sign Atletico Madrid wing-back Yannick Carrasco during the January transfer window. Spurs have started the season in strong form under Antonio Conte and booked their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League last week.

Carrasco originally joined Atletico from Monaco in 2015. And following a two-year spell with Dalian Professional in China, the talented ace returned to Spain on an initial loan deal at the start of 2020, before making the move permanent seven months later.

The 29-year-old has starred for Diego Simeone’s side in recent years but has failed to reach his usual standards this around. And the player is reportedly one of four Atletico stars who have been placed on the transfer list after the club failed to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Tottenham chased Carrasco in the summer as Conte looked to build a squad that could compete for Premier League and Champions League silverware. And, according to Mundo Deportivo, the Lilywhites are still very interested in signing him.

Carrasco, who is valued at £35million by Transfermarkt, had good offers to move to the Premier League during the last January transfer window last season but ultimately decided to stay at Metropolitano Stadium after being promised an improved contract.

But a new deal has not materialised amid a downturn in form, and Atletico now appear ready to cash in on him. Atletico’s Champions League exit means they now need to find over £60m to balance the books. And the club have now apparently made Carrasco, Joao Felix, Thomas Lemar and Rodrigo de Paul available for transfer.

Last month, Marca reported that Spurs wanted to sign Carrasco for £52m during the summer. Atletico blocked the star from leaving but are now said to be regretting their decision.

Conte will be keen to delve back into the transfer market in the New Year as Tottenham look to launch an assault on the Premier League and Champions League trophies. The Italian has been heavily backed since becoming Spurs manager a year ago and brought in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus in January, before adding the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perisic to his ranks in the summer.

Conte has led his team to third place in the Premier League table this time around and also saw them top their Champions League group following their victory over Marseille last week.
