Romelu Lukaku was considered for shock Man City transfer after let go by Man Utd

Manchester City reportedly considered a move for former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku last summer, with the Belgian viewed as a potential successor to Sergio Aguero.

Aguero is City's all-time record goalscorer but, with his contract coming to an end and concerns over his injury record, the club have been looking into potential long term replacements.

Gabriel Jesus has also had fitness problems and, with both players missing at times this season, City have found themselves outscored by 12 other Premier League teams.

Now, the Daily Telegraph reports that City boss Pep Guardiola has made signing a successor to Aguero his main priority after putting pen to paper on a new contract.

The report claims that City identified Lukaku as an option last summer but they were unwilling to pay Inter Milan's £93.75m valuation.

Lukaku had only been at the club for a single season after joining from United in a bumper £74m move and he had hit the ground running, bagging 34 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions.

It is also claimed that City have now turned their attentions to Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

The 21-year-old has earned comparisons to Edinson Cavani and been involved in 11 goals in 11 appearances in all competitions for Benfica this season after making the move from Spanish Segund Division side Almeria back in September.

Lionel Messi has also been linked with a move to City, with the Barcelona superstar out of contract at the end of the season and available to leave for free.

However, Guardiola has once again insisted that he wants Messi to stay at the Nou Camp, saying: "Messi is a player from Barcelona, if you ask me my opinion I have a huge gratitude for what Barcelona has done for me, in the academy, as a player and as a manager, they gave me absolutely everything, what I want is for him to finish his career there.

"I would like, as a Barcelona fan, that Leo finishes there, but this is his final year of contract and I don't know what's going to happen in his mind.

"Right now he's a Barcelona player and the transfer market will be in June or July. We have incredible games to play and achievements to try and achieve and this is only in our minds."
