Oscar Piastri drops cryptic hint he’s just weeks away from becoming F1 driver

Australian hotshot Oscar Piastri has dropped a big hint about his future in Formula 1 in a cryptic post to Instagram.

The reigning Formula 2 champion, who is yet to make his F1 debut, is currently serving as a reserve and test driver for Alpine, but with Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon still contracted to the team until 2023 and 2024 respectively, the 21-year-old Aussie will have to be patient and bide his time.

But according to The Race, Piastri is "closing in" on a move to Williams ahead of the 2023 season, with Canadian driver Nicholas Latifi's contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

To stoke the flames even further, Piastri shared an image of the iconic Silverstone racetrack on his Instagram Story on Tuesday, captioning the post: "Driving here soon," suggesting he might not even have to wait until the end of the season to join the big leagues.

The British Grand Prix, which takes place at Silverstone, gets underway next month, sparking rumours of a mid-season switch with Latifi – who has been struggling all year so far.

According to The Herald Sun, Piastri also has a release clause in his current contract if he doesn't have a seat in Alpine's first team assured by the end of this month.

"Piastri has got to be in F1 next year whatever it is and whatever comes his way he has got to take it," F1 commentator Martin Brundle said.

Piastri is one of the hottest prospect in racing after winning a hat-trick of titles across the Formula Renault Eurocup, Formula 3 and Formula 2 over the past three seasons.

He missed out on an instant F1 graduation for 2022 as Alpine had no room at its own team and could not agree a deal for Piastri to go on loan elsewhere.
