Manchester United reportedly have interest in Rennes star Eduardo Camavinga. It’s certainly easy to see why, with the 18-year-old one of the hottest talents of his generation. So Express Sport will now take a look at what that could mean for Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek.

Nemanja Matic

United signed Matic back in the summer transfer window of 2017, raiding Chelsea for the veteran.

He’s been a good asset for the club in the time since, though is yet to add to his trophy haul during his time at Old Trafford.

But, over the past year, Matic has struggled for regular action.

The Red Devils have Scott McTominay and Fred also at their disposal, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a big fan of both players.

Matic had been expected to leave the club in 2020 before winning his manager round and penning a contract extension until 2023.

But there’s been talk of a move to Roma, especially with Jose Mourinho now in charge over at the Stadio Olimpico.

And if United sign Camavinga, it’s feasible they’ll allow Matic to leave the club for a new challenge elsewhere.

At the age of 32, the Serb won’t want to waste the final few years of his career sitting on the bench.

Matic would likely get more opportunities over at Roma, with Italian football tailor-made for a player of his qualities.

United wouldn’t need him to fill in like he does now if they had Camavinga, who would expect to start both matches.

And they’d likely be grateful for the opportunity to get the midfielder off the wage bill, especially if the money saved can be used on signing players for the future instead.

Donny van de Beek

United had made Jack Grealish one of their priority targets 12 months ago.

However, the Red Devils ended enquiries with Aston Villa when they learned he’d cost a substantial £75million – money they simply weren’t prepared to pay.

As an alternative, Solskjaer then raided Ajax for Van de Beek – believing the Netherlands international had all the talent and potential to be an Old Trafford hit.

However, a year on, and Van de Beek is yet to live up to expectations.

The 24-year-old is certainly useful but, with Bruno Fernandes ahead of him in the pecking order, stands very little chance of starting regularly next term.

Solskjaer has pleaded with the 24-year-old to be patient and Van de Beek, as thing stand, is happy to stay put.

But that could change if clubs come in for the Dutchman, with the likes of Inter Milan, Barcelona and even Arsenal recently linked.

The arrival of Camavinga would be another blow to Van de Beek, too.

Given how the Rennes star would demand regular action, it would be hard to imagine Van de Beek being happy with yet another player to compete with for a starting spot.

And United may want to get him off their books to use funds for Camavinga, while Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane are also on their wishlist.

Camavinga tipped for the very top

Speaking recently, Camavinga’s agent Jonathan Barnett tipped the Rennes star to become the best midfielder in the world.

“At the moment, he’s a Rennes player,” Barnett told Goal. “He likes Rennes and, at the moment, we haven´t really taken to other clubs. It isn’t our position.

“Let’s see what happens later on, but he’s doing well in Rennes and that’s fine. Being the best midfielder in the world, that’s how I see his future, [with] a lot of medals and a lot of trophies.

“[Madrid are] a great club, a great club to play for.

“Eduardo will have a choice of a lot of clubs if Rennes decides to release him. They will be one of the four of five clubs in the world he might go to.

“Eduardo would love to play for a top club. Madrid are one of those top clubs in the world, so are Barcelona.”
