Manchester City are in the midst of an unprecedented situation, having been charged with more than 100 breaches of financial regulations by the Premier League. The saga could have implications for a number of City’s rivals, with retrospective and future punishments on the table if the Sky Blues are found guilty.

City were struck by a bombshell on Monday when the Premier League published their list of charges after a four-year investigation. The Manchester club are alleged to have pulled financial tricks regarding former manager Roberto Mancini’s contract and failed to cooperate with the investigation, among other things.

There are fears that the process leading up to a possible punishment could take years, with City expected to fight the accusations with all their legal might. Supporters are also waiting for clarity on the futures of numerous high-profile individuals, including boss Pep Guardiola, who said that he would leave the club if he had been lied to.

City spot errors in Prem statement

Manchester City insiders have supposedly spotted a number of small errors in the Premier League’s statement outlining charges against the club on Monday, according to The Athletic.

City believe the timing of the allegations to be deliberate, with the government due to release a white paper in support of an independent football regulator this week, and the Premier League keen to show that they can govern effectively without new help.

Sources therefore believe that the errors are indicative of a rushed attempt to lay out the accusations against City.

Three stars could leave

Representatives of some City players have supposedly noted that contract negotiations will be made more difficult by the threat of punishment on the horizon, according to The Athletic.

That puts three stars at risk, with Ilkay Gundogan due to be out of contract in the summer. City were supposedly negotiating a new deal with the German, although it remains unclear how yesterday’s news may affect his decision to stay or go.

Two more first-team stars, Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte, could also look for a new challenge rather than tie themselves down to a club in the firing line. The duo are out of contract in 2025 and they would normally be due for an extension by now.

Urgent meeting called

After City were rocked by the Premier League’s statement on Monday morning, The Daily Mail claim that they called emergency meetings in the afternoon to discuss the matter with staff.

Club chiefs supposedly relayed to workers what was set out in their statement – City are confident that they will prevail and they are determined to clear their name.

Manager Pep Guardiola was among a small group of senior employees to be made aware of the charges before the news broke.
