Gary Lineker trolls Man Utd hero Schmeichel live on BBC over Man City

Samira Ahmed shares fans reactions to Gary Lineker ‘spat’

BBC host Gary Lineker was unable to resist cracking a joke at the expense of former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel live during coverage of the Red Devils’ FA Cup semi-final against Brighton. The Danish stopper spent eight years at Old Trafford during the 90s and became a club icon, though United supporters will want to forget his spell at their local rivals.

Schmeichel’s final club of his career was in the blue half of Manchester, prompting Lineker to quiz the pundit over his thoughts on Pep Guardiola’s side and their attempts of matching his accolades at United. Lineker told Schmeichel: “As a former Manchester City player you must be delighted if they do the treble won’t you?”

The comment was met by laughter from their BBC colleagues Alan Shearer and Glenn Murray, though Schmeichel was keen to play down his affiliation with City.

Schmeichel replied: “That is why it is so important that we now beat Brighton, so we can stop them.” As he made his affiliations clear despite a stint with United’s rivals, who could go on to match the feat that the goalkeeper achieved in 1999 by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

Schmeichel had just the one season at City before retiring in 2003 and boasts the unique achievement of never being on the losing side in a Manchester derby, having featured for both teams as in nine seasons at United he was not beaten by their rivals – while the Red Devils under Sir Alex Ferguson could not get one over on City and Schmeichel during his season at Maine Road.

Kevin Keegan previously revealed that it took just 20 minutes to convince Schmeichel to move to City, who at the time played down the story of the stopper joining United’s rivals. “It is not dramatic this,” Schmeichel said at the time of his departure from Aston Villa.

“I had a one-year contract with an option to extend it by one year. But neither Aston Villa nor myself have been interested in using the option. That Aston Villa now want to test Peter Enckelman for the rest of the season is just natural.”

While Schmeichel firmly remains a United icon despite his late-career move, his emphatic statement regarding their rivals will be music to the Red Devils supporters’ ears.

“There’s no doubt, nobody can argue that Manchester United is not the biggest club in the world. It is,” he told Omnisport in 2017.

“It’s the club with the most fans, supporters and there are numbers out there which are official numbers so you can’t argue that. In terms of popularity they’ve [City] got no chance of being anywhere near the biggest in the world.”
