Chelseas Raheem Sterling scores luckiest first goal ever as new signing nets

Chelsea's new summer signing Raheem Sterling bagged his first goal for the club on Friday, but he didn't know much about it.

Sterling scored in a 3-1 win against Udinese on Friday, with N'Golo Kante and Mason Mount scoring the other goals for Thomas Tuchel's side. Former Everton and Watford star Gerard Deulofeu scored for the Italian outfit, but only one goal caught the eye.

The £45million summer signing was played through on goal by Jorginho but saw his chipped effort saved by Marco Silvestri. However, the ball somehow then bounced off Sterling and found the net even though the 27-year-old was none the wiser.

Sterling's goal has been described as the 'luckiest first goal ever' by fans, who saw their new signing's effort bundled in against Udinese. Sterling's first two games for Chelsea ended in defeat, but he was on the winning side after scoring on Friday.

The England international has become used to winning at Manchester City, but was brought back down to earth during pre-season as Chelsea lost to both Charlotte FC and Arsenal. But the Blues are finally back to winning ways, and fans will be relieved to see their new signing score, despite the nature of it.

"Got to be the luckiest first goal ever scored," said one fan on Twitter. And another couldn't believe their eyes as they added: "What a strange, strange goal."

But some fans were worried as Sterling squandered multiple chances to add to his tally during the game, after getting lucky with a rebound in the first place. "Why does he overthink every time he's in front of goal," one fan wondered.

"His finishing worries me just as much as all our other attackers," another scrutinised. But Sterling's record speaks for itself in the Premier League as he's scored 109 goals in the top flight.

Across stints at both Chelsea and Liverpool, Sterling has joined the Premier League 100 club, and he could add plenty more to his tally if his move to Stamford Bridge proves to be a success. Sterling sits 26th on the all-time Premier League goal scorers tally, level with Ryan Giggs and ahead of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.
