Burnley want Forest to pay Cornet's £17.5m release clause in one go

Burnley want Nottingham Forest to pay Maxwel Cornet’s £17.5m release clause up front or pay more for the Ivory Coast international in installments as he plots a move back to the Premier League

  • Maxwel Cornet is being chased by a number of Premier League clubs
  • Nottingham Forest have been told to pay the player’s release clause in full
  • The Ivory Coast international would join Jesse Lingard in the East Midlands

Burnley want Nottingham Forest to pay Maxwel Cornet’s £17.5m release clause in one go or pay more for the 25-year-old.

Everton and Fulham have previously asked for loans with a fee and an option to pay around £20m next summer.

The Ivory Coast international is being chased by a number of Premier League clubs after he was relegated with Burnley last season.

Nottingham Forest have rejoined Fulham and Everton in pursuing Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet

Despite the Clarets’ relegation, Cornet impressed, scoring nine goals in total.

Forest had been expected to move for Emmanuel Dennis, the Nigerian striker who played for Watford last season after joining from Bruges, but that move now appears to be off.

That has opened up the likelihood of Cornet arriving.

Were the forward to join Forest, he would be joining the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi, Neco Williams and Jesse Lingard in arriving at the newly promoted club this summer.

Jesse Lingard signed for Nottingham Forest last week on a lucrative one-year deal

Forest will play in their first Premier League game since 1999 when they take the field against Newcastle United on August 6.

Steve Cooper will be bidding to ensure Forest remain in the division this season and Cornet, should he sign, will be expected to provide some experience and quality in forward areas.

It had appeared that Forest had missed their chance to be able to sign the Ivorian when he rejected suggestions that he could end up in the East Midlands.

As it is, Forest now appear to be the likeliest destination for the player.
