F1 fireball crash survivor Romain Grosjean aiming for fairytale Indy 500 win
The crown jewel in the IndyCar season takes place this weekend in Indianapolis at the Indy 500, where former Formula One driver Romain Grosjean is eyeing a fairlytale win.
36-year-old Grosjean spent nine consecutive seasons in F1 before his exit in 2020, with his final race coming in Bahrain where he was involved in a horrific crash where he was fortunate to survive.
Grosjean was engulfed in a fireball following his collision with the barrier in Bahrain and suffered serious burns to his hands, though he hasn't turned his back on motor racing since his departure from Haas two years ago.
These days, Grosjean is racing in IndyCar and is set to compete in this weekend's Indy 500 as he seeks to secure his first IndyCar win, having secured four podium finishes and one pole during his 18-race career in IndyCar so far.
Grosjean will start ninth on the grid for the race, with former Formula One drivers Marcus Ericsson and Juan Pablo Montoya also lining up for the race alongside a host of other drivers who also harbour experience within the cockpit of an F1 car.
In his first year in IndyCar, Grosjean raced only in street and road courses in the 2021 season but made quite an impression, almost picking up the Rookie of the Year Award, and is stepping it up in 2022 with Andretti Autosport as he'll compete in the whole schedule.
This year, Grosjean came close to securing a first IndyCar win at Long Beach, nearly taking the win from Josef Newgarden before an accident caused by Takuma Sato caused the race to finish under caution – with Grosjean having to settle for a podium.
While his impact has been a positive for Grosjean and the fans, he has faced backlash from a number of his rivals on the grid – particularly from Graham Rahal, who stated he had 'overstayed his welcome' earlier this month after the pair collided twice competing for seventh place in the Grand Prix of Alabama.
Grosjean currently lies ninth in the IndyCar standings this season with a total of 114 points, with two top-five finishes and three top-ten finishes this season.
Will Power is currently leading the way at the top of the standings with 170 points, holding a 14-point advantage over second-placed Alex Palou.
