Lions’ Dan Campbell has an odd, dangerous request for organization: a pet lion

The Literal Detroit Lions.

Dan Campbell has cemented his status as the most nutty head coach in the NFL and he hasn’t even had the opportunity to coach a regular-season game yet. But if his offseason soundbites are any indication, that’s not a title he’s going to relinquish anytime soon.

On Monday, Campbell reminded Lions fans what they’re in for during his tenure. Speaking on the “Pardon My Take” podcast, Campbell said he has one odd, dangerously specific request for training camp: a real, live, pet lion.

I’ll tell you what I would really love to do, just in general. I’ve talked to (Lions owner) Sheila (Ford Hamp) about this. I don’t think we’re going to be able to do it, but I would love to literally just have a pet lion. Just a legit pet lion on a chain, a big-ass chain. And he just, he really is my pet.

We just walk around the building, we go out to practice, we’re in 7-on-7, we’re behind the kicker when he’s kicking. We’re just, there we are.

Campbell said that he would potentially train the lion to, uh, defecate in front of position groups who aren’t practicing well or hard, which seems like another strange motivational tactic, as if biting kneecaps wasn’t enough.

Campbell said he would make sure the lion is fed well, manicured and even petted, and potentially losing an arm would “validate” having the lion. Campbell added that he would be willing to lose an appendage if it meant he could motivate his team to win a Super Bowl.

The first-year head coach was given a six-year pact with Detroit to get the ship turned around. There’s no telling whether his contract has an out clause that triggers should he lose a limb to a 400-pound killing machine.

Though, there are 32 head coaches in the NFL, and only one of them is crazy enough to make this work.
