Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence relishes opportunity to work with Tim Tebow: ‘I played with him on all the NCAA games’

Trevor Lawrence is apparently a fan of Tim Tebow.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports’ Eric Edholm, the Jaguars’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft said that Tebow’s “heyday at Florida” was one of the things that got him into football.

“That was really when I started to get into watching football and college football, right when Tim Tebow was in his heyday at Florida,” Lawrence said. “I played with him on all the NCAA games.”

While Lawrence had never met Tebow before he joined the Jaguars, he relishes the opportunity to work with the quarterback-turned-tight-end. Lawrence also highlighted what the 33-year-old Tebow can bring to Jacksonville despite never having played at tight end and having played zero regular-season NFL snaps since 2012.

“The first thing that jumped out to me was the person. Just his character. What he brings to the locker room. A guy you want to be around. He just does things right,” Lawrence said of Tebow. “I think coach [Urban] Meyer and the staff knew that, bringing him on.”

And how has Tebow done in his limited time since signing in Jacksonville?

“He’s been awesome so far,” Lawrence said. “Just a hard worker. And he’s in great shape. It’s been cool to see, and obviously it’s still really early and he’s still learning and just coming in a couple days later than some other guys for the install, so he’s just getting his feet wet. But man, he’s doing great.”

Meyer’s decision to sign Tebow after five years away from the sport and several years in minor league baseball was met with a lot of scrutiny. And at one point, there were reports that the Jaguars’ staffers weren’t all on board with signing Tebow.

But with Lawrence willing to give him a chance, the rest of the team will follow suit.

And if Tebow continues to serve as a locker room leader and continues to sop up attention to keep the pressure off Lawrence, this signing could end up having more of a positive impact than many expected, even if Tebow is only along for the offseason ride.
