10-year-old Jared Goff was ‘very upset’ when 49ers didn’t draft Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and has been for almost the entirety of his career. Many would argue he’s the most talented passer the league has ever seen, and it’s hard to make a strong case against that.
Sean McVay and Jared Goff will get their first crack at Rodgers on Sunday, the Rams’ first meeting with the Packers since 2015. Both have a great deal of respect for the future Hall of Famer – who McVay said will get in on the “first ballot” – but Goff has a different connection to Rodgers.
Growing up in the Bay Area, Goff was a 49ers fan. In 2015, the Niners had the first overall pick in the draft and went with Alex Smith instead of the local kid, Rodgers. On Wednesday, Goff was asked if he has any memories of Rodgers at Cal.
“I was really young. I was – man, what year was he drafted? ’05? I was like 9, yeah. I mean yes and no. I can’t give you exacts, but if I remember him being there and remember him going to some of those games, yeah,” Goff said.
When it came to the draft that year, Goff was crushed that his hometown team didn’t take what seemed to be his favorite player. Needless to say, 10-year-old Goff wasn’t pleased with the selection.
“He was upset, but with that being said, I’m a fan of Alex (Smith), as well,” Goff said. “But yeah, 10-year-old Jared (Goff) was very upset when he found out they didn’t take Aaron.”
You could say Goff got revenge on his favorite team growing up by beating them 39-10 on Sunday, but now he’ll try to take down Rodgers for the first time in his career.
