Khabib Nurmagomedov insisted there ‘can only be one king in the jungle’ in response to fierce rival Conor McGregor’s retirement announcement. 

The 30-year-old UFC star has not fought since losing to Nurmagomedov back in October and many fans were waiting for his reaction after McGregor broke the news in the early hours of Tuesday morning. 

Accompanied with a picture of him with his title belt, McGregor’s rival ruthlessly tweeted: ‘There can be only one king in the jungle,’ followed up with a one ‘finger emoji’.

McGregor and Nurmagomedov have a fractious relationship and ended the contest in Las Vegas on bad terms with the Dagastani leaping from the cage causing a mass brawl. 

A member of Khabib’s entourage entered the Octagon and punched McGregor in the side of the head and both fighters are currently serving suspensions from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. 

Talk of a rematch between the pair was quiet of late but Nurmagomedov took the chance to remind his rival who is No 1 in the lightweight division following his retirement news.

Hours after suggesting on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ that he was in discussions for a UFC return in July, McGregor left fight fans stunned with an announcement on social media that he was calling time on his career. 

McGregor told the chat show host: ‘We’re in talks for July. I don’t necessarily need to fight. I am set for life.’ 

But hours after that interview, which took place in an Irish pub in New York, he posted: ‘Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as ‘Mixed Martial Art’ today.

‘I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!’

UFC president Dana White was quick to give his thoughts on McGregor’s retirement. when he told ESPN: ‘He has the money to retire, and his whiskey is KILLIN [sic]’ it,’ he commented.

‘It totally makes sense. If I was him, I would retire too. He’s retiring from fighting, not from working. The whiskey will keep him busy, and I’m sure he has other things he’s working on.

‘He has been so fun to watch. He has accomplished incredible things in this sport. I am so happy for him, and I look forward to seeing him be as successful outside of the octagon as he was in it.’
