UFC superstar Dustin Poirier has worryingly revealed that he has remains in hospital after contracting a staph infection and stated “s**** getting serious” after his body had not responded to antibiotics. Just three weeks ago, Poirier secured a huge win over Michael Chandler in his last bout, and has won three of his last four fights after defeating Conor McGregor twice in 2021. But Poirier had reportedly fallen ill with staph, and is continuing to be given treatment in hospital.
Staph infection is a common occurrence for MMA fighters, with the infection being contracted through close-contact, caused by bacteria from human skin. It presents itself as a rash on the skin, and is treated with antibiotics, usually not being too serious and clearing up after a few days. Some staph infections though, spread at an exceedingly fast rate and can be life-threatening if left untreated.
Former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker was ruled out of action for over a year after struggling with a staph infection. UFC president Dana White said: “He had staph infection in his stomach. From what I understand, it wasn’t treated properly and started to eat away at parts of his organs. He’s in serious condition, so it’s going to be a minute before he’s back, I think. Hopefully it turns around quick but that stuff is life threatening if not treated the right way.”
Former UFC figher Kevin Lee had once fought with a staph infection, and attempted to hide it from cameras before Joe Rogan brought it up on commentary when he walked in to the cage to fight Tony Ferguson.
Poirier will remain in hospital receiving treatment, he confirmed as he tweeted: “Going on day 2 in the hospital. S**** getting serious.”
Just moments later, ESPN’s UFC correspondent Brett Okamoto said: “Some context on Dustin Poirier’s IG posts about being hospitalized … told me it’s staph, but he’s not responding to antibiotics over the last 24 hours. Undergoing further blood work now, hopefully get some answers today.”
Poirier’s archrival Conor McGregor has since tweeted, sending his best wishes in saying: “Heal up soon scruffy knickers”.
Poirier’s most recent win over Michael Chandler has seen him rise up the rankings in the lightweight division and is likely to be the next challenger for current champion Islam Makhachev, should he defeat Alexander Volkanovski in February.
McGregor is set to return to the octagon, and is expected to move up to welterweright after putting on a significant amount of weight, and reportedly walking around at close to 200lbs.
