McGregor fight result: How did Dustin Poirier beat Conor McGregor at UFC 257?

Conor McGregor lost out to Dustin Poirier in their rematch at UFC 257. The Irishman won the first bout with a first-round stoppage back in 2014, but Poirier has now levelled their rivalry. The American said afterwards: “We’re 1-1, maybe we have to do it again.”

McGregor was stepping back into the octagon for the first time in 12 months.

He last fought at UFC 246 where he needed just 40 seconds to stop Donald Cerrone.

McGregor was also competing for the just the second time since his 2018 defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Poirier, on the other hand, fought in June, beating Dan Hooker via unanimous decision.

How did Dustin Poirier beat Conor McGregor?

Poirier’s victory over McGregor at UFC 257 came in the second round.

He survived some big shots in the opening exchanges and took McGregor to the floor.

While the Irishman controlled the centre of the octagon, Poirier was effective with his kicks.

McGregor was then forced back with a flurry of punches and floored with a big right hand.

Poirier landed several more blows before the fight was stoppage at two minutes and 32 seconds of the second round.

“If you put in the time in here, you’re going to get cosy in here and I just have to dust it off and come back and that’s what I will do,” McGregor said of his defeat.

“I need activity, you don’t get away with being inactive in this business.

“I’ll take my licks. I’m gutted and I put so much work in. Well done Dustin: 1-1, good man.

“It’s a tough one to swallow, I put in a lot of work, I’m proud of my work. We’ll get to go again and that’s it.”
