Conor McGregor suspended for six months after brutal defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 257

UFC: McGregor responds to Khabib’s comments after loss

Conor McGregor has been issued with a maximum six-month suspension on medical grounds following his knockout loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 257. The Irishman was making his comeback in the sport for the third time having originally announced his retirement last summer.

He had been talking up his prospects of a possible world title belt challenge to follow after the Poirier fight, but that’s almost certainly been put on hold for the time being.

McGregor was stopped by Poirier in the second round after taking a vicious barrage of leg kicks by his opponent.

He was seen walking around using a crutch to help support him after the fight in Abu Dhabi.

And the former two-division UFC champion has now been hit with a mandatory 45-day suspension from fighting following the defeat.

McGregor was also handed a maximum 180-day suspension due to the nature of the leg injury.

However, that could be cut short by a doctor should an x-ray show no break in his tibia or fibula.

McGregor had previously spoken about potentially fighting up to four times in 2021, but that plan will likely be re-evaluated.

He has spoken of his desire though to fight Poirier again for the trilogy this summer, with a potential bout scheduled for around May.

DON’T MISS

McGregor wrote an Instagram post: “Thanks for the support everyone! Was not my night/morning in there but a great contest to improve on.

“I’m excited at the blockbuster trilogy I now have on my hands. Dustin is a hell of a competitor and I look forward to going again.

“Elevating the leg and the spirit on my way home.”

And speaking immediately after the fight, McGregor suggested that the reason for his defeat to Poirier was due to it being his first bout inside the octagon for a year.

“It’s heart-breaking and hard to take,” he said. “My leg is completely dead. It’s like an American football in my suit at the minute.

“If you put in the time in here, you’re going to get cosy in here and I just have to dust it off and come back and that’s what I will do. I need activity, you don’t get away with being inactive in this business.

“As long as you stay active and as long as you compete, things shape around you. You show up, you reap the rewards. That’s what happened for Dustin and it’s what’s happened against me.

“I’ll keep my eyes on the prize. Don’t write me off yet, I’ll make my adjustments and keep moving.

“I’ll go back, get healthy and I’ll re-prepare. I’ve got to a great place in my body physically and I’ll continue to grow that.”
