Barbora Krejcikova has slammed her US Open round four opponent Garbine Muguruza, after accusing the Spaniard of ‘humiliating’ her during their post-match handshake.
Krejcikova defeated her opponent in straight sets during their last 16 match, however Muguruza was less than impressed with her Czech competitor after calling in the doctor when 5-6 down in the second set, after winning the first.
As a result, Krejcikova took a lengthy nine-minute break before returning, but went on to turn round the second set deficit 7-6, to the dismay of Muguruza who showed her discontent during the heated handshake, branding the Czech ‘unprofessional’.
Following her victory, and the confrontation Krejcikova criticised her Spanish opponent’s handling of the situation, admitting she felt humiliated following their meet at the net.
The Czech said: “I just know what [Muguruza] told me at the net. I don’t know what was happening after.
“I would say it was pretty negative, but that’s the way it is. I just didn’t expect that I’m going to be accused like this. I just felt that I got really humiliated by a Grand Slam champion, which I’ve never seen. It’s tough. I’m sad about it.”

This came after the Spaniard had already voiced her opinion on the encounter, in a brief press conference after the match where she explained ‘she wasn’t very happy’ with Krejcikova.
Muguruza commented: “Listen, I don’t really want to talk about this … I’ll let you guys judge what you think about this. Well, I think, between players, you know a little bit how to behave in certain moments and, yeah, I wasn’t very happy at the end of the match.”
Despite her controversial advancement past the Grand Slam champion, Krejcikova has since been eliminated from the event after being defeated in straight sets, 6-1 6-4 by world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in today’s quarter-final.
The Czech is not the only one to draw criticism for her lengthy US Open breaks, as Stefanos Tsitsipas was slammed for his delays throughout the men’s singles following games with Andy Murray and Carlos Alcaraz.

The Greek’s backlash first began in his first round victory over Murray, after he left the court for over eight minutes for a toilet break. He then followed this up by taking another lengthy stoppage during his fourth round showdown with Alcaraz after he lost the third set.
Tsitsipas’ long breaks eventually led to booing from the New York crowd, however the world No 3 was quick to defend his actions following the criticism.
He commented: “I’m not pretending that everyone loves me. My intentions are not to be loved by everyone, I feel like people, they don’t understand. They are here for the show, they want to watch tennis.
“They’re very impatient, especially the new generation. They just want to get it done quick. For me, the only thing I did is change from wet clothes to dry clothes. Apparently it’s a huge issue.”
