Simona Halep produces a 67-minute demolition of Magdalena Frech

Former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep produces a stunning 67-minute demolition of Magdalena Frech to book her spot in Wimbledon’s last-16

  • Simona Halep beat  Magdalena Frech 6-4 6-1 to reach the Last-16 at Wimbledon
  • The former champion needed just 67 minutes to cast aside her Polish opponent
  • Halep beat Karolina Muchova and Kirsten Flipkens to reach the Third Round
  • The former world No 1 has not won a Grand Slam since her SW19 victory in 2019

Simona Halep cruised into the second week of Wimbledon looking every inch a potential repeat champion in the Ladies Singles.

The Romanian is back on the All England grass for the first time since being crowned champion three years ago.

And she booked her place in the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-1 win over in-form Polish opponent Magdalena Frech in little over an hour.

Simona Halep demolished Magdalena Frech in just 67 minutes to reach the last-16

‘It was a good match for me,’ Halep smiled afterwards. ‘The wind did not make it easy, but I enjoy every day when I am playing at Wimbledon.

‘It helps in terms of my confidence that I won the tournament before, but every match is difficult here.

‘I am giving my best and that is all I can do.

Frech was blown away by Halep’s hard-hitting power as she twice fell to a 5-1 deficit

‘The second week is when things get tougher, even though the first week is hard too. I am looking forward to whatever comes next for me.’

Halep, 30, thrashed Serena Williams in the 2019 final, but Covid followed by a serious calf injury forced her to miss the French, Wimbledon and Olympics last year, as she dropped from No 3 to out of the world’s top ten for the first time in seven years.

Showing flashes of the form that took her to the summit of the world rankings, the No 16 seed was supported by coach Patrick Mouratoglou, hired to help get her back to the top after his split from a ten-year partnership with Williams in April.

Halep is yet to drop a set whilst Frech reached the first round at a Grand Slam for the first time

With $38m in prize money alone and the 2018 French Open prior to her Wimbledon success, Halep remains surprisingly highly motivated.

She had Frech on the run from the start and raced into a 5-1 first set lead before being pegged back and eventually holding her serve to love and getting over the line in 34 relatively one-sided minutes.

Halep regained her composure after her wobble to take another 5-1 lead in the second set too and this time made no mistakes as she saw off Frech in one hour and seven minutes of hard-hitting tennis.
