Rafael Nadal responds to Roger Federer's classy message after Australia Open win
Rafael Nadal says it ‘meant a lot’ to receive a heartfelt message from tennis rival Roger Federer after he won the Australian Open to become the most successful male player in history.
Nadal came from two sets down to beat US Open champion Daniil Medvedev in a stunning Melbourne final on Rod Laver Arena.
The 2-6 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-4 7-5 victory saw Nadal move one ahead of his great rivals Federer and Novak Djokovic in the race to finish with most major men’s singles titles.
After Nadal lifted his 21th Grand Slam trophy, Federer said: ‘What a match! To my friend and great rival Rafael Nadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles.
‘A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion. Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world.
‘I am proud to share this era with you and honoured to play a role in pushing you to achieve more, as you have done for me the past 18 years. I am sure you have more achievements ahead but for now enjoy this one!’
Responding to Federer’s classy message, Nadal said: ‘It means a lot to me.
‘We have an amazing relationship – we did amazing things together. For me it’s a great honour to be part of his era.
‘Together we have enjoyed and lived amazing moments of the history of our sport. To receive a message like this from him means a lot to me.
‘I wish him well, he knows, and I really hope that we will be able to play again in important stages.’
Nadal won his first Australian Open in 2009 but had lost four finals before becoming a two-time champion in Melbourne last weekend.
Speaking at the trophy presentation, the Spaniard said: ‘Without a doubt it is one of the most emotional wins of my career.’
Australian Open runner-up Medvedev, meanwhile, added: ‘If we talk about tennis, I’m not that disappointed.
‘It was a huge match, for sure, and there were some small points, small details, that I could have done better if I wanted to win. But that’s tennis. That’s life.
‘Rafa played unreal and raised his level. I mean, two sets to love up, I wanted just to go for him, go for more. He was really strong, the way he played for four hours, I was even surprised.’
