British No 1 Emma Raducanu has been offered support by a former US Open champion, with the star struggling for form on the court. Bianca Andreescu knocked Raducanu out of the Miami Open last week, sparking a run to the fourth round in which she has started resembling the player who shocked Serena Williams in the 2019 Flushing Meadows final.
Both have found rediscovering that New York magic elusive and whole experience is something that the newly open Andreescu – due to play in Miami last sixteen late on Monday night – would like to compare notes on.
The 22-year-old Canadian, said: “I would love to talk to her about just like what happened after US Open. All the success, all the media stuff like that, how she dealt with it, how I dealt with it, how we can maybe help each other in that way.
“Also, I know that we both haven’t been having, I guess, the results we wanted. I don’t want to speak on behalf of her, but I’m sure she wants to do better than she is. And maybe we could just kind of help each other out in that sense.”
Raducanu had an incredible 2021 by reaching the Wimbledon quarter-final in her first main draw debut at just 18. However, since then she has failed to live up to her high expectations set when she first stepped foot on the court.
The 20-year-old won the US Open in 2021, beating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. The tennis star made history by becoming the first qualifier, male or female, to win a Grand Slam title.
And she became the first British female winner at Flushing Meadows since Virginia Wade in 1968.
Furthermore, Raducanu became the first woman to win the US Open without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2014.
Raducanu is the youngest Briton to win a Grand Slam title and the youngest women’s Slam champion since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004. She was part of the winning Bulldogs team in the Battle of the Brits in August of 2020.
In November last year she beamed with pride as she collected her MBE from King Charles. In a statement after collecting her MBE, Raducanu, said: “It’s been great to receive my honour today from his Majesty the King – I feel extremely grateful.”
