French Open is set to be moved back a WEEK to May 30 due to increasing Covid cases in France… but the proposed switch will cause a CLASH with the British grass court season

  • France is currently undergoing another serious wave of Covid infections

This year’s French Open looks set to move back a week, causing a clash with the British grass court season.

The clay court Grand Slam is expected to be moved to a start date of May 30, to give it the best chance of happening under the most normal conditions possible due to the ongoing pandemic sweeping France.

According to L’Equipe the move will be unveiled on Thursday, causing a knock-on effect to the UK grass court swing.

This means the calendar will essentially revert to what it was prior to 2015, when there was just a fortnight between Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

It is difficult to see Wimbledon going back a week in a year which sees the Olympics coming hot on the heels of The Championships.

The initial grass court events may see slightly weaker fields, as might the Cinch Championships at Queen’s Club.

Last year the French Open was moved to the autumn as a far from ideal necessity.

The authorities hope that by the end of May the current wave of infections in Paris and concurrent restrictions will have lessened.

The move is to try and give the event the best chance of going ahead in normal conditions
