'Deal with it!' Kevin Pietersen slams Emma Raducanu over Wimbledon retirement
England cricket legend Kevin Pietersen has criticised Emma Raducanu over her retirement from Wimbledon.
Raducanu, 18, withdrew from her fourth-round match against Ajla Tomljanovic on Monday night after suffering breathing difficulties.
The British wildcard had enjoyed a incredible first week at the All England Club – winning her first three matches in straight sets – but retired from the Tomljanovic match while trailing 6-4 3-0.
Responding to a tweet from Piers Morgan that accused Raducanu of ‘quitting’ during her match against Tomljanovic, former England captain Pietersen said: ‘Talent is one thing, but mental toughness is what separates the good from the great in sport!
‘Dealing with pressure, bad form, negative media etc is HARD, but that’s sport. It’s demanding. Deal with it, or someone else will deal with it in your place!’
Raducanu appeared in discomfort throughout the second set of the Tomljanovic match and was holding her stomach after several points.
She called for medical assistance at 3-0 down and appeared to be hyperventilating in her chair as two doctors treated her.
The teenager left court to receive further treatment but it was soon announced on Court One that she had withdrawn from the match.
