Wrexham’s Rob McElhenney enjoys Notts County promotion as Twitter ‘like’ spotted
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney ‘serious’ about Gareth Bale playing at Wrexham
Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney made no secret of his wish for Notts County to win promotion to the Football League via the play-offs after the two teams battled it out to become National League champions this season. And that hope became a reality on Saturday when the Magpies twice came from behind against Chesterfield to clinch a return to the EFL via a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Wembley.
The pressure was off for Wrexham, who under the watch of McElhenney and fellow Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, clinched the only automatic promotion place with a record 111 points. But it was a different story for County, who despite amassing 107 league points themselves had to navigate their return to league football the hard way.
The US actors had already nailed their colours to the mast prior to Saturday’s winner-takes-all final, publicly declaring their support for Luke Williams’ side, after County pushed Wrexham all the way in the league title race, finishing 23 points ahead of third-placed Chesterfield.
And after moving quickly to congratulate the Nottingham club after Saturday’s victory, McElhenney has kept up his appreciation of County’s achievement on social media.
The Hollywood star’s most recent Like on Twitter is press box footage of BBC commentary team Mark Stallard and Charlie Slater going wild at Wembley as County came back from the brink, not once but twice, to eventually edge past the Spireites on penalties.
“Notts are alive! Notts are alive!” shouted Slater after John Bostock took the match into extra-time before Ruben Rodrigues volleyed home a 108th-minute equaliser for 2-2, ensuring that the contest needed to be settled on spot-kicks.
Both McElhenney and Wrexham co-owner Reynolds had previously expressed their dismay that only one team is promoted automatically from the National League under current rules.
Speaking after the Red Dragons’ promotion from the National League, Reynolds said: “We are rooting for Notts County. We want to see them go up to League Two and face them next year. They’re incredible.”
And following the Magpies Wembley success, he added: “I have such enormous respect for everything they’ve built and everything that they’ve done and it’s just insane for me that only one goes up automatically.
“If it were different – and I think it should be – both of these clubs would be celebrating together right now. Because what they’ve done is not only created drama greater than anything you’d see in a damn movie but just something I think people will be talking about for ages.”
