Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka admitted he feels bittersweet about the League Cup winner's medal he received from Manchester United last season.

The Slovakian goalkeeper was on the losing side at last year's Carabao Cup Final, which saw Erik ten Hag's side overcome the Magpies 2-0 at Wembley. Dubravka, 34, was previously sent on loan to the Red Devils in the summer transfer window, but was recalled in the January market by Eddie Howe's side.

However, he was still eligible for a medal, because he played in United's third and fourth round victories over Aston Villa and Burnley respectively. Fast forward to the present day, Dubravka is the man between the sticks for Newcastle, as Nick Pope is currently nursing an injury. With the Magpies facing Chelsea in the League Cup quarter-final, he is hoping he can win the competition as a Newcastle player.

"I got a medal. I didn't really expect it because I didn't know if they would give it to me," Dubravka said, via the Mirror. "It was (weird) but if you think about it, it's part of the game.

"I played two matches for them and how many matches was it to get to the final? So it was a strange situation to be in, I didn't want to be in it. I have it at home, but not on display!

"Don't get me wrong it's still a medal so I still appreciate it. It's special circumstances and it was weird obviously because I wanted Newcastle to win. When we played against Manchester United (later that season) in the league they brought it up."

Dubravka will likely be in goal when Howe's men face Mauricio Pochettino's side. He kept a clean sheet in the fourth round when Newcastle overcame United 3-0 at Old Trafford. While he is appreciative of his medal, a trophy with the Toon would mean more than anything else.

“It would be absolutely fantastic to do it for Newcastle this season," he added. "Everyone is buzzing here and everyone wants to win something and achieve something here and it would be amazing.

“The region means everything to me. I've spent so much time here. I could have left the club a couple of years ago but I didn't want to because this is a special place. The stadium should be 100,000 capacity!"
