Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds’ message to Luton after promotion speaks volumes

What can Wrexham expect in League Two?

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds subtly confirmed that he has one eye on reaching the Premier League after Luton Town’s promotion via the Championship play-offs. The Hatters were playing in the National League as recently as 2013/14, with their ascent providing inspiration for Wrexham, who have just fought their way out of the division themselves.

Comfortably making the play-offs by finishing third in the Championship, Luton quickly established themselves as the better team at Wembley on Saturday. Jordan Clark gave them the lead, and although Gustavo Hamer equalised for Coventry City in the second half, the Hatters eventually prevailed on penalties.

Winning ‘the richest game in football’ will reportedly bank Luton a minimum of £135million due to the lucrative nature of the Premier League. They were playing in the fifth tier less than a decade ago and remained in League Two until 2018/19.

Wrexham will hope to follow in their footsteps after a record-breaking National League campaign, with the riches of Hollywood owners Reynolds and Rob McElhenney certainly having the desired effect.

A tweet from Reynolds confirmed that ambition after Luton’s victory was confirmed on Saturday, when he wrote: “Congrats to Luton Town and also [eyes emoji].” Exactly how Wrexham will fare in League Two next season is already hotly anticipated.

The high-profile nature of Reynolds and McElhenney’s project allows them to attract top-level players. Former England goalkeeper Ben Foster came out of retirement to join the club this term, while ex-Blackburn Rovers cult hero Morten Gamst Pedersen has also expressed an interest.

There has even been talk of Welshman and five-time Champions League winner Gareth Bale pulling his boots back on to play for the Dragons, with McElhenney inviting him for a day out golfing where he sarcastically promised ‘not to try and convince him to un-retire’.

Although the hint of Premier League ambitions following Luton’s victory was a subtle one, Reynolds and McElhenney have already outlined, in black and white terms, how far they want their project to go. “Ultimately, like any business you want it to self-perpetuate and continue growing,” explained Reynolds.

“You don’t want to lose money but I don’t think either of us are in this to make money either. So it’s just about growing the best possible club and finding value in any place we can, whether that’s financial or emotional: sometimes that’s indistinguishable.

“Of course, our goal is to get to the Premier League – why wouldn’t it be, if we can do that? Whether it takes five years, whether it takes 20 years, that’s the goal, that’s the mission.”
