Wolves still keen on signing £17million-rated Joao Palhinha

Wolves still keen on signing £17million-rated Joao Palhinha from Sporting Lisbon despite interest from Fulham… with Bruno Lage targeting improvement in midfield as star man Ruben Neves considers leaving Molineux

  • Joao Palhinha has been on Wolves’ radar for years and could move for £17million
  • Sporting Lisbon are prepared to sell the 26-year-old, who has 14 Portugal caps
  • Wolves boss Bruno Lage will be in the market for midfielders in the market
  • Ruben Neves is ready to leave and has been given a £70million price tag

Joao Palhinha remains a key target for Wolves this summer despite Fulham also expressing an interesting in the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

Sporting are prepared to sell the 26-year-old, who is hugely admired by Wolves boss Bruno Lage, for about £17million, and they have been in discussions with the Molineux club for some weeks.

Lage’s priority is to improve his midfield this summer with doubts over the futures of his regular starters. Star man Ruben Neves is ready to leave Wolves and has been given a £70million price tag, while Leander Dendoncker is also thought to be available and Joao Moutinho is in discussions over a new deal.

Palhinha, who has 14 caps for Portugal, played for Braga against Wolves in the Europa League in 2019-20, and has been on the club’s radar ever since.

After Wolves tailed off alarmingly in the second half of last season, Lage is keen to shake up his squad and is prepared to allow key men to leave. Raul Jimenez is one of those who could depart although any move for the Mexican, who has two years left on his contract, would prove complicated.

Yet transfer funds are likely to be limited. Owner Jeff Shi said Wolves would have ‘a new team’ in time for next season yet there will be little room for manoeuvre in the market.

‘I have to talk with the financial guys in the club,’ said Shi. ‘I think it’s quite tough for every club in the Premier League, so if you look at the ceiling, it’s still not easy to just spend. We will do something to have a better squad.’
