Wayne Rooney has won as many league games as Rangnick since Man Utd appointment
Derby manager Wayne Rooney has won as many league games as Ralf Rangnick since the German replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United boss.
Rangnick's sorry record as United chief has been brought into focus even more following Tuesday night's embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Liverpool. The Red Devils have won just nine league games since the German's appointment in late November – the same number as Old Trafford legend Rooney has achieved at Derby in the same timeframe.
Unlike Rooney, who has been working under financial constraints and the threat of liquidation looming over him, Rangnick has some of the best players in world football at his disposal.
Despite his privileged situation, the former RB Leipzig boss has been unable to get a tune out of stars like Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford, all of whom came in for criticism at Anfield.
Rooney, on the other hand, has had to cope with the loss of several first-team players throughout the season, including experienced centre-half Phil Jagielka, midfielder Graeme Shinnie and forward Sam Baldock.
He has had to utilise the club's superb academy system – something that he has done to good effect – even though it was not enough to keep them in the Championship.
The Rams were relegated on Monday following defeat to QPR, leading Rooney to say that he hopes the club's old owner Mel Morris loses sleep over their drop into League One.
"Hopefully he doesn't have a good night's sleep tonight and that plays on his mind," Rooney told BBC Radio Derby. "I think he needs to have a think about it.
How do you rate Rangnick's spell as United interim manager? Let us know in the comments section.
"Where the club's been left, it was a complete mess. I know Mel Morris is a big Derby fan, so I'm sure he's sat at home tonight disappointed.
"We are disappointed as we've done everything we can to try and not let this happen and worked extremely hard."
Derby may be playing in League One next season, but no one could begrudge the job Rooney has done under the circumstances. Whether history will look back quite so fondly on Rangnick's spell as United boss is open to question.
