Roman Abramovich’s voice has people confused as ‘nobody ever hears him speak’

Roman Abramovich is someone that has been familiar to English football fans for going on two decades – but few people have ever actually heard him speak.

During his time as Chelsea owner, which looks set to come to an end very soon, the Russian oligarch has always made a conscious effort not to do interviews or speak with the press. That is despite his profile as one of the most successful club owners in modern football.

However, an old video has now emerged of Abramovich talking to Turkish chef Salt Bae. The sanctioned 55-year-old only stops to chat briefly with the cook, who asks how his lunch was.

"It's the best in the world," replied Abramovich in a surprisingly high-pitched voice before scampering off. People in the comments were shocked to hear the billionaire's voice for the first time.

One person wrote: "I've been a Chelsea fan for 11 years and this is the first time I've heard him speak." Another user added: "The only time you'll hear him speak."

Someone else remarked: "Despite being worth 10billion he seems shy." While a fourth commenter chimed in with: "My first time on hearing the voice of Roman."

Abramovich gave an interview to Forbes last year – his first to a media publication in 15 years – where he discussed his aims as Blues owner. Fast forward 12 months and those hopes are in tatters following sanctions imposed on him by the UK government.

In his book, ‘The Deal’, super agent Jon Smith explained why Abramovich has Russian refused to speak with the media, suggesting a concern about how he would be perceived back in his homeland.

"It is perhaps a shame he is not more visible to the public but conducting interviews wouldn’t be in Roman’s interests," Smith writes.

"His responsibilities include investing and allocating money in Russia so how would it look if he talked about the merits of spending £30million on Cesc Fabregas, Andriy Shevchenko or Fernando Torres while people in his homeland struggle to make ends meet?"

Those responsibilities will change in the near future with Chelsea set to be sold in the coming months. Three bids remain on the west Londoners, who are third in the Premier League table.
