Wanderers frustrated by lack of refereeing consistency

Western Sydney coach Carl Robinson has called for A-League referees to show consistency when booking players, believing Wanderers midfielder Graham Dorrans is being harshly treated by match officials.

Dorrans was shown a yellow card for the eighth time in just 13 A-League appearances in the Wanderers’ 1-1 draw with Brisbane Roar at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday night.

It means the Scotsman will be suspended for a second time this season and miss his side’s home clash on Tuesday night against competition leaders Central Coast.

“It seems to be that every time he fouls his mates, because he’s got a few mates around the place and around the league, he gets yellow carded,” Robinson said of the former Rangers and Dundee hardman, whose latest booking was for a foul on the Roar’s ex-Celtic striker Scott McDonald.

“When you’re a midfield player you need to tackle. You need to make contact.

“Just because you’re a midfield player, it shouldn’t mean that the first tackle you make you get booked.

“If that is the case, no problem but then it has to happen every time, every week to every player, and that doesn’t happen.

“Graham’s frustrated that that is case because I thought he was excellent (against the Roar) and it’s been marred.

“It’s happened too many times in relation to that, so that’s why I get frustrated sometimes or the other players do because all we ask for is consistency.

“I know people don’t like that word but unfortunately we need to be consistent.”

Dorrans’ tireless work in the midfield will be missed by the fifth-placed Wanderers against the fighting Mariners at Bankwest Stadium.

“That’s going to be a tough game. It’s always a physical game against Central Coast,” Robinson said.

“They’re very organised and they’re at the top of the table because they deserve to be at the top of the table.

“I know people are talking about other teams but the table doesn’t lie.

“They’ve got a lot of good experienced players in that team and they’re ready to fight, so we’ve got to be up for that game but we’re looking forward to it.”
