Son Heung-min is close to agreeing a new contract to stay at Tottenham. The South Korean forward is in the final stages of talks about a two-year extension to his current deal, which runs out in 2023.

The 28-year-old is now ready to finally agree terms on a new contract, which has been on the table since September.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is keen to get the deal done to finally provide some good news for his clubs’ fans after a horrific 10 days.

The past week-and-a-half has seen the club embroiled in the European Super League fiasco, sack manager Jose Mourinho, and then last weekend lose the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City.

The ESL farce has seen fans calling for Levy and the Tottenham board to quit, with supporters protesting outside the club’s stadium.

The news about the popular Son though will though come as a welcome boost to the club.

The Korean, left in tears on the pitch after the Wembley defeat by City, had been widely expected to leave this summer after yet another trophyless season, along with strike partner Harry Kane.

Bayern Munich were linked with a move for Son if a deal with Spurs could not be finalised, and Real Madrid have also watched his progress.

Son is having one of his best seasons yet at Tottenham, with 23 goals and 10 assists in 49 appearances so far, with his partnership with Kane one of the deadliest in the Premier League.

Kane’s future is more uncertain, with the England striker this week expressing his disappointment at yet another fruitless season at the north London club.

Kane said after being named Premier League Player of the Year at the London Football Awards: “Individual awards are great, they are fantastic achievements.

“When I look back at the end of my career, I will go over it and take in a little bit more. The goal right now as a player is to win team trophies.

“As much as this [award] is great, I want to be winning the biggest prizes that there is to offer as a team and we are not quite doing that.

“It is one of those [situations], it is bittersweet. I would rather be winning team trophies and this award. It is what it is.”

Son – now rated at around £80million – meanwhile joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 in a £22m deal, and has been a huge success at the club.

Overall, his record at Spurs reads 105 goals and 63 assists in 275 appearances, although he is yet to win silverware.

Tottenham meanwhile are casting the net wide in their search for a new manager to take over in the summer, with Lille’s Christophe Galtier now also a contender to succeed Mourinho.

RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann will join Bayern Munich at the end of the season while Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers has ruled himself out of the running to take over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
