Tottenham confirm Steven Bergwijn's £28m switch to Ajax

Tottenham confirm Steven Bergwijn’s £28m switch to Ajax… with the winger returning to the club of his youth after miserable Premier League spell – where he scored just eight goals in TWO years

  • It brings to an end Steven Bergwijn’s two-and-a-half-year stay at Tottenham
  • The 24-year-old scored on his debut but never secured a regular starting spot
  • Born in Amsterdam, his heart has always been set on a summer move to Ajax
  • Bergwijn will wear the number seven shirt for the reigning Eredivisie champions

Tottenham have confirmed the sale of Steven Bergwijn to Ajax in a deal worth £28m.

Bergwijn joined from Ajax’s Eredivisie rivals PSV Eindhoven in 2020 but failed to perform consistently during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Thanking the forward for his service, Spurs made reference to a number of Bergwijn’s notable moments in a Tottenham shirt.

Tottenham have sold Steven Bergwijn to Ajax for £28million in a deal confirmed on Friday

‘We have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Steven Bergwijn,’ their statement read.

‘Signed from PSV Eindhoven in January, 2020, the Netherlands international marked his debut with the opening goal in a 2-0 win against Manchester City and scored our first goal on football’s return from lockdown against Manchester United in June, 2020,’ it added.

‘Stevie went on to make 81 appearances for us in all competitions, scoring eight goals, including a memorable double in injury time to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory against Leicester City in January last season.

Despite having some notable moments, Steven Bergwijn more often than not flattered to deceive during his 18-month stay at Spurs

‘We wish Stevie all the best for the future.’

Meanwhile, Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder said the move was indicative of the player’s ‘ambition’.

‘It is indicative of Steven’s ambition that he chose to make the step to Ajax. He is a player with many qualities. He has enormous drive and is also very goal-oriented. Of course, I am happy that we were able to sign him, he adds new quality to our team,’ he said.

Bergwijn, 24, completed a medical in Amsterdam on Wednesday and will wear the number seven shirt for the reigning Eredivisie champions.

Ajax offered to waive some of the fee owed by Tottenham on their Davinson Sanchez transfer as part of the negotiations.

The Colombian defender swapped the Johan Cruyff Arena for north London in a £42million deal in 2017.

With Holland heading to Qatar in November, the forward is mindful to have pursued game time this summer in a bid to stay in manager Louis van Gaal’s mind

For Bergwijn, it brings to an end his two-and-a-half-year stay at Spurs following his move from PSV in January 2020.

He scored on his debut in a victory against Manchester City, but never nailed down a regular starting spot at the club.

The winger started only four Premier League matches last season – three of which came under former boss Nuno Espirito Santo in August – and all three of his league goals came as a substitute.

Ajax offered to waive some of what Spurs owe for Davinson Sanchez as part of negotiations

Antonio Conte has been recruiting in earnest this summer – splashing out £75million on Yves Bissouma and Richarlison as well as bringing in free agents Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster – so it was only a matter of time before players started heading for the exit.

Bergwijn’s heart has always been set on a move to Ajax, having been born in Amsterdam before starting out in the club’s youth system.

With the World Cup on the horizon, he is keenly aware that he needs regular game time in the next few months to stay in the mind of Holland boss Louis van Gaal.
