Toni Kroos reacts to claims that Sergio Aguero statue looks just like him

Toni Kroos has reacted to Sergio Aguero’s new Manchester City statue looking more like him than the Argentine legend.

Aguero’s statue was unveiled outside the Etihad Stadium on Friday, ten years on from his iconic last-minute goal against Queens Park Rangers which clinched the league title for City. The Premier League’s second all-time top goal-scorer was celebrated by having a silver-looking statue of him erected at the club.

And the 33-year-old was present at the unveiling and smiled as he was pictured alongside it, though the statue was instantly mocked on social media by fans who claimed it looked more like Real Madrid veteran Toni Kroos.

German international Kroos even got in on the banter himself, jokingly responding to a tweet of the statue with: “Sure?” after they captioned it “Sergio is here.”

Fans also chimed in with their thoughts, with one Twitter user writing: “Is it just me or this statue looks more like Kroos than Aguero?”

Another joked: “Have you seen that Toni Kroos statue at Etihad Stadium? Sergio Aguero must be so jealous of Kroos after everything he did for the Citizens.”

Aguero is arguably one of the most important players in the club’s recent history. He joined City in July 2011 for a fee of around £35million from Atletico Madrid before winning the title in his first season.

He went on to win four more Premier League trophies, one FA Cup and six League Cups. His 260 goals in 390 appearances also makes him City’s all-time leading goal-scorer.

Aguero retired from the game prematurely last year due to a heart condition. It came despite him joining Barcelona just months earlier.
