Manchester United have agreed a deal to bring goalkeeper Tom Heaton back to the club on a free transfer this summer.

The former England keeper was apart of the United squad for eight years from 2002-2010 but never made a first-team appearance.

The 35-year-old will now return to Old Trafford after his contract at Aston Villa expires at the end of June, according to The Athletic.

Manchester United have agreed to bring back veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton back to the club

Heaton (pictured in action against United in 2019) will provide back-up as United’s third choice

Sportsmail revealed earlier this month that Manchester United were interested Heaton as back-up for David De Gea and Dean Henderson.

United have not offered a new contract to Lee Grant and it is believed Sergio Romero has refused to sign a contract extension with the club.

Therefore, United have opted for Heaton – who made 20 Premier League appearances in the 2019/20 season after signing from Burnley before being side-lined with a serious knee injury.

Heaton was a United youth player for five years, and left Old Trafford to join Cardiff in 2010

He will now push both Manchester United keepers David De Gea and Dean Henderson

The club subsequently signed Emiliano Martinez for £17 million last summer and he has since established himself as first choice goalkeeper at the club.

The Argentina international has featured in every single one of the club’s Premier League matches this season, leaving Heaton to occupy the bench.

Nevertheless, Heaton is regarded as a hugely popular figure in football and has a wealth of experience that will help push De Gea and Henderson.
