This Real Madrid player earned Chelsea £15million

Hazard pay! Chelsea earn £15m windfall from Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph over Liverpool as part of a clause in the Belgian’s deal… even though he played just 83 MINUTES in the competition

  • Chelsea will get £15million for Real Madrid’s Champions League win
  • Hazard has a performance clause in his contract when sold by the Blues in 2019
  • Belgian receives a winner’s medal despite playing only 83 minutes in this season’s Champions League

He may not have won the hearts of Real Madrid fans in his time there but for Chelsea, Eden Hazard is the gift that keeps on giving, literally.

The Blues are set to receive a £15million windfall thanks to Hazard winning the Champions League with Los Blancos after their 1-0 defeat of Liverpool in Paris on Saturday night.

The payment is due to a clause in Hazard’s contract when he joined Real Madrid from Chelsea for £103m in 2019, a fee that included performance-related add-ons.

Coughing up the cash must be particularly galling for Real Madrid since Hazard picks up a winner’s medal despite playing just 83 minutes across the entire competition.

The Belgian has made just three appearances in the club’s Champions League campaign and last featured way back in February, in the last-16 first leg loss at Paris Saint-Germain. He only came on for eight minutes.

Before that, Hazard played nine minutes of the 2-0 victory over Inter in Real’s final group game. He only started one match, which was the disastrous 2-1 home defeat against Sheriff Tiraspol in September last year.

The windfall payment will be welcomed by Chelsea’s new owners, led by Todd Boehly

In the final, Hazard was an unused substitute who watched from the bench as Vinicius Jr scored the winner for Real in the second half.

Hazard’s Real Madrid career has been a huge flop, with the 31-year-old spending a significant chunk of his time at the Spanish giants on the injury list.

In the three years he has been at the club, Hazard has played just 66 times and scored a paltry six goals.

The windfall news will be welcomed by Chelsea’s new owners, led by Todd Boehly, who have committed to investing in the squad this summer.
