Theo Walcott suffered brutal ‘disappointing’ treatment from England boss Capello

Ex-England star Theo Walcott has revealed he was disappointed with how he was treated by Fabio Capello.

Capello was the Three Lions boss for the 2010 World Cup, and the Italian opted against taking the speedster to South Africa. Walcott, who hung his boots on Friday, revealed their relationship deteriorated after he missed two meetings with the boss.

Speaking to Gary Neville on Sky Sports' The Overlap, Walcott said: "The World Cup I should have gone to was in 2010, when I was flying at my best and doing really well. Fabio Capello was very blunt as a manager.

"I remember missing a meeting, misreading the schedule, and was s***ing myself thinking that I’ve got to go see Capello about this, to apologise. I went to John Terry and told him that I missed a meeting, and he said not to worry about it.

"I then went to go see Capello and he literally just shrugged his shoulders and shoved the door in my face.

"This was during the qualifying stages – I’m not saying that was the reason why I was left out, but I remember the phone call and I wanted to ask what it was that I didn’t do, or what I could have done, and he just hung up.

"He [Capello] just said that he wasn’t going to take me to the World Cup and then hung up. I have time for people and if they want to improve and ask questions, I’ll find time for that. He [Capello] didn’t, and that’s the disappointing thing.”

As a 16-year-old, Theo Walcott was selected for the 2006 World Cup – but few would have predicted that would have been his sole World Cup experience.

After missing out in 2010, Walcott was injured in 2014 – before he was snubbed by Gareth Southgate in both 2018 and 2022.
