South American star catches goalie out with 76-yard wondergoal from near own box

A South American star has scored a 76-yard wondergoal after catching the opposition goalkeeper out from near his own box.

The Ecuador Cup quarter-final clash between Imbabura and Independiente del Valle had been crazy enough as it was, with nine yellow cards and two red cards meaning there was a lengthy amount of stoppage time added on.

Imbabura midfielder Leandro Pantoja scored a penalty in the 97th minute to make for a nervy finish, with Independiente's 2-0 lead cut in half. The hosts were pushing for an equaliser with the game in the 105th minute.

Goalkeeper Mario Valero was so focused on his team attacking that he was caught completely off guard as Julio Ortiz let fly from way inside his own half.

Valero, who had been nearer the half-way line than his own goal, sprinted back as the ball looped over his head and bounced towards the net.

His surprising burst of pace meant he came agonisingly close to stopping it from going in, but he stumbled and was left crumpled in a heap next to it in the goal.

The long-range goal sealed a 3-1 win for Independiente, who progressed to the final four of the competition but will be without midfielder Luis Vega and forward Jaime Ayovi, who were both sent off in the heated match.

But they'll be thankful they can call upon Ortiz again after his heroics. The winner of the competition progress into the Copa Libertadores, South America's equivalent of the Champions League.
