Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United career is in the balance after a torrid run of form for the Red Devils. And with other managers being touted to take over, club legend Sir Alex Ferguson is keen for Mauricio Pochettino to be the man to take over if Solskjaer is sacked per reports.

Solskjaer’s reputation has dwindled since the start of the season after some less-than-desirable results for the Old Trafford club.

A 5-0 defeat at home to arch-rivals Liverpool saw United fans leaving in their droves at half-time last weekend.

Just one point from a possible 12 in four Premier League games before beating Tottenham on Saturday night has seen Solskjaer touted for an exit.

But the Norwegian head coach still seemingly has the support from the United board, although that could change should more poor results follow.

And a report by the Daily Mail states that although United icon Ferguson is supportive of Solskjaer, he continues to ‘hanker’ after ex-Tottenham boss Pochettino as the Norwegian’s potential replacement.

Pochettino endured relative success at Tottenham, leading the club from Europa League mediocrity to becoming genuine Premier League title challengers and reaching a Champions League final.

The Argentine was sacked just six months after losing to Liverpool in the 2019 final in Madrid following a poor run of results in north London.

He was heavily linked with the United job a couple of seasons ago, although Solskjaer’s improved form earned him a new contract at the start of summer and Pochettino was never instated.

He has since moved to Paris Saint-Germain, and may take a lot of convincing considering he currently manages Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe amongst other superstars.

However, recent reports say that PSG players are underwhelmed with his efforts at the club – meaning a move to United could be on the cards if he is to leave.

Ferguson managed United for 26 years, winning every competition possible to cement himself as arguably football’s greatest ever manager.

And Solskjaer has confirmed he had a chat with the Scot over his future.

“Yes, on both accounts, if that’s short and sweet,” Solskjaer said.

“Joking apart, we had a commercial day, Sir Alex came to do some commercial stuff and I met him and spoke to him for a brief moment because he was in there with Cristiano [Ronaldo].

“I’ve been through some very bad moments here as a player and when I’ve been a manager I’ve dealt with setbacks.

“There probably have been two or three crises, at least, since I became the manager here and one thing I can say is I’ll always give it a good shot and fight back.”
