'Sad' Spurs boss Jose Mourinho reacts to Chelsea sacking Frank Lampard
Jose Mourinho admitted he was ‘sad’ to hear that Frank Lampard had been sacked by Chelsea, after his Tottenham Hotspur side booked their spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Mourinho, who has twice faced the axe at Stamford Bridge, managed Lampard during his time as Chelsea boss and has gone on to face him in the dugout on several occasions, and he described him as an ‘important person’ in his own career.
Lampard lasted just 18 months at Chelsea before he was sacked by the ruthless Roman Abramovich and Mourinho pointed out that this was just the nature of the ‘brutality’ of modern football.
‘You know, I don’t think Frank wants to speak to me or anybody apart from his close let’s say family and big friends,’ he said when asked if he would be reaching out to Lampard.
‘But of course, I’m always sad when a colleague loses his job and, of course, Frank is not just a colleague.
‘He’s an important person in my career so of course I feel sorry he did. But like one of your colleagues was saying to me, it’s the brutality of football, especially the brutality of modern football.
‘So when you become a manager, it’s something you have to know sooner or later is going to happen to you.’
It wasn’t plain sailing for Spurs in their 4-1 win on Monday night. Fred Onyedinma gave them a scare in the first half after he put Championship side Wycombe in front after 25 minutes.
Gareth Bale, who was guilty of missing several glorious chances early on, eventually found the back of the net to bring the Premier League side level on the stroke of half-time.
In the second half, their class told and Mourinho and co. will go on to face Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton in the fifth round after a goal from Harry Winks and a late Tanguy Ndombele double.
