Jockey Tom Buckley faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being knocked out at Plumpton on Monday in a nasty fall from Glass Of Bubbles.

The partnership came to grief at the fourth flight of the opening maiden hurdle when the Charlie Longsdon-trained filly appeared to be blinded by the low sun in the straight, stepping at the hurdle and falling awkwardly in an incident which sadly claimed her life.

Buckley was unconscious for several minutes before coming round and being assessed by the track’s medical staff.

He was later driven home by rider William Kennedy. ‘I’m not blaming anyone as incidents like that can happen in racing,’ said Longsdon.

‘However, it doesn’t paint the sport in a good light. She guessed at the flight and jumped it like she was a novice with the sun in her eyes. I’m just thankful Tom is OK.’

The incident clearly rang alarm bells as there were just two hurdles jumped because of the low sun in the ensuing novices’ hurdle in which 1-8 favourite African Dance beat just two rivals.
