Ryan Mason responds to Harry Kane's 'farewell' lap after Tottenham defeat

Ryan Mason played down the significance of Harry Kane’s ‘farewell’ lap of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following the side’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa and insisted the striker’s behaviour was ‘normal’ based on previous seasons.

Kane, 27, is understood to have informed Spurs of his intention to leave after yet another year without silverware and Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all made approaches for the England captain, widely regarded as one of the finest attacking players in world football.

However, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will reportedly block Kane from joining a direct Premier League rival even if the north London club are offered a British record transfer fee for their prized possession.

Despite the intense speculation surrounding his future, Kane led the line against Villa and Spurs’ evening got off to the perfect start as Steven Bergwijn fired them in front with a thunderous strike in the eighth minute.

‘And the second goal as well so we’ve given away two goals in a Premier League match and it’s very difficult when you give a solid team two goals.

‘We started well, we had some moments early on in the second half also where we probably need to take them for the momentum, for the whole feeling of the game and we didn’t.

‘We’re very, very disappointed with how this evening panned out.’

Mason is confident his team can still end the season on a high when they travel to fifth-placed Leicester on Sunday.

Asked whether failing to secure European football will be seen as a ‘major disaster’, Mason replied: ‘We’ve got another game at the weekend so I’ve said all along that I’m not going to answer hypothetical questions: if this happens, if that happens.

‘We’re disappointed not only with tonight but also how the season has gone as well because it’s not where we want to be. That’s no secret. We’ve said that and everyone has said that.

‘It’s been a disappointing campaign but we have to try and get a positive result at the weekend and see what happens from there.’
