Roy Keane takes swipe at David de Gea as he slams return of Man Utd ‘circus’

Roy Keane has taken aim at David de Gea and the return of Manchester United’s “circus” after the 7-0 annihilation by Liverpool.

All hype surrounding United and a potential Premier League title charge following their League Cup win was put to bed after their drubbing at Anfield on Sunday. The Red Devils suffered their biggest defeat since 1931 as Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all netted past De Gea in one of the most embarrassing days in the club's history.

Former United captain and legend Keane was on punditry and did not hold back in his scathing criticism of the humiliating display, taking aim at the Spanish goalkeeper and United’s senior players in particular.

“You've got international players, World Cup winners… it's school boy stuff!” Keane began. “You can forgive players having a bad day, but look at this!

“[Bruno] Fernandes' body language today was disgraceful. He's a really talented boy, he's your captain. But his body language, waving his arms not running back, you wouldn't be happy with him.

“I see the players come here today, I see one or two come out in the second half having a laugh and a joke. They're 1-0 down at Anfield and they're having a laugh and a joke with some of the Anfield staff.

Why do you think Man Utd were battered by Liverpool? Let us know in the comments section.

“I don't like to see all that rubbish. That circus can creep back into Man United and the senior players have to keep an eye on that. Same at West Ham the other night.

“Lots of presentations. I understand one or two but there were four or five. You look at half time, a couple of players walking down the tunnel having a laugh and a joke. You're at work, this is serious, this is big boy stuff. Forget this laughing and joking rubbish.

“West Ham let them off the hook the other night. I wonder if De Gea will get a presentation tonight, letting seven goals in. If you're an international goalkeeper and you let in seven goals, that last goal was school boy stuff.”

Keane hasn’t shied away from slamming De Gea in the past, especially in the trophyless era since 2017. That is despite the Spaniard being voted United’s Player of the Year on four occasions.

The Irishman went on to say he was glad he never had to dealt with such embarrassing defeats at United before once again taking digs at United’s leaders.

He said: “Shocking game really. United's senior players were embarrassing, didn't show any leadership.

“Tough day for United. Thank God I’ve never been part of a team that got beat that bad. When the going went tough they went missing.”
