Rooney ‘didn’t enjoy’ Man Utd fans mocking Wenger after 8-2 Arsenal hammering

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has admitted he felt 'uncomfortable' after the Red Devils' 8-2 demolition of Arsenal.

Rooney bagged a hat-trick as United overwhelmed the north London side in an astonishing afternoon at Old Trafford. The Red Devils were locked in a battle with Manchester City for the title, and City also put a north London side to the sword that day, beating Tottenham 5-1.

And over a decade on from the memorable afternoon, Rooney has admitted he felt 'uncomfortable'. Rooney admitted the old rivals had not been the same since 2009, and the gulf in class was summed up by the 2011 clash.

Writing in The Sunday Times, he said: "I scored a hat-trick but look back on the game with mixed feelings. It was a bit uncomfortable, really.

"I love Wenger and have a lot of respect for him and seeing him being mocked by fans with 8-2 on the scoreboard was not something I enjoyed.

"Even Nani's goal, when he lobbed Wojciech Szczesny, felt like taking the mickey."

United were eventually pipped to the title that season, thanks to a heart-stopping winner from Sergio Aguero in the 94th minute on the final day against QPR.

The Red Devils bounced back the following campaign – but a decade on that remains United's last Premier League triumph.
