Maurizio Sarri has been handpicked by Roma to become the Giallorossi’s new manager from next season, according to reports in Italy.
Current Roma boss Paulo Fonseca’s contract expires at the end of the season and while the Serie A club do have an option to apply a year-long extension to the Portuguese manager’s contract, the 48-year-old’s future is in serious doubt.
Roma are currently seventh in the Serie A table, 11 points behind Juventus in fourth but Fonseca’s side can qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League. They face Manchester United in the semi-finals that start this week.
Roma want Maurizio Sarri to become their new manager next season, according to reports
The Giallorossi have reportedly already decided not to renew Paulo Fonseca’s contract
And according to Corriere dello Sport, Sarri’s agent – Fali Ramadani – is set for a meeting with Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto on Monday to discuss the potential appointment of Sarri.
The report also claims the decision to replace Fonseca with Sarri at the end of the season has already been decided – even if they get past United in the semi-finals and win the Europa League final next month.
Sarri enjoyed great success as Napoli manager, where he guided the Partenopei to a Serie A runners-up spot in three out of his four seasons in southern Italy – the lowest league finish he mustered was third in 2016-17.
Sarri spent a year at Chelsea and finished third in the top-flight and won the Europa League
The Italian manager then joined Chelsea in the 2018-19 season where he finished third in the Premier League table and won the Europa League for the Blues – who beat Arsenal 4-1 in the final in Baku.
Sarri, however, was criticised by Chelsea fans for his style of play which influenced the 62-year-old to move to Juventus for the 2019-20 campaign – but the coach was sacked in his first season in charge despite winning the Serie A title.
The former Chelsea coach was dismissed shortly after the Old Lady were eliminated from the Champions League at the last-16 stage by Lyon – who went on to reach the semi-finals that year.
Sarri’s most recent job was a season at Juventus where he won the Scudetto but was sacked
Corriere dello Sport also claim that Sarri’s plans at Roma would include winger Cengiz Under – who is currently on loan at Premier League side Leicester City this season.
The Turkish winger has played 19 times for Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes in all competitions but has only featured once in the Premier League since the beginning of February as Leicester close in on a Champions League qualification spot.
Over the weekend, Sarri was the bookies’ favourites to become the new Tottenham boss after Jose Mourinho’s sacking – but Sportsmail revealed on Monday that Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag is Daniel Levy’s first-choice.
