Jamie Carragher tears into Everton and brands boyhood club ‘a joke’

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has torn into crisis club Everton, branding his boyhood side “a joke” amid a terrible run of form.

The Toffees have not won a game since September, picking up just two points since that victory over relegation-threatened Norwich City.

It is a run of form that has seen them drop to 16th in the Premier League table, just five points off Burnley in the final relegation spot and be dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Championship QPR.

The frustration of fans has only been enhanced by the presence of former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez in the Goodison Park hotseat.

Director of football Marcel Brands appears to have carried the can for the club’s recent troubles, with the Dutchman sacked by Everton over the weekend.

But Carragher believes that the blame for Everton’s failures lies squarely at the door of owner Farhad Morishi, who bought the club in 2016.

“The club is a joke right now. You mentioned them being a laughing stock, I wouldn't go that far, but if I go back to the David Moyes era, Everton had something about them,” Carragher told Monday Night Football.

“Yes, they didn't win a trophy, but there was a spirit about them, a fight, it was a tough place to go. They stood for something.

“Not long afterwards Moshiri came in, and because we couldn't break that ceiling, because we didn't have the money under David Moyes, to go that step further.

“Moshiri comes in and look how many managers he's had in that time. If you count interims he's had eight managers. He's on his third director of football.

“The money spent is mindboggling and they're getting worse. Under Moshiri they've signed 58 players. That's why I talk about this club being a joke and a mess right now.”

Former owner Bill Kenwright remains on the club’s board, but Carragher insists that the decisions being made by his successor are harming the Toffees.

“At this moment on the board they've got Bill Kenwright and Denise Barrett-Baxendale, staunch Everton supporters who love the club,” he added.

“Then you've got the money guys in Moshiri and Alisher Usmanov in the background. There's no way Bill Kenwright and Denise Barrett-Baxendale wanted Rafa anywhere near that club.

“But the problem we have is that because they're not in control they're terrified of going against Moshiri in any way, because he's the guy with the money.

“He's the one with who is gonna produce that stadium. Without him there probably is no stadium. Decisions made by Moshiri are really poor. He hasn't got a clue what he's doing.

“Hence eight managers, third director of football, players getting signed left right and centre. Yes, he's got the money, but he's got no football expertise at all.”
