Roma duo Dybala and Wijnaldum 'injury doubts for Europa League final'
Roma duo Paulo Dybala and Georginio Wijnaldum ‘are both injury doubts for next week’s Europa League final’ against Sevilla, in a blow for Jose Mourinho’s side as they seek a second European trophy in as many years
- Roma will face six-time champions Sevilla in the Europa League final next week
- It comes after the Serie A side won the Europa Conference League in 2022
- They may be ‘without Paulo Dybala and Georginio Wijnaldum’ in the game
Roma ‘could be without key players Paulo Dybala and Georginio Wijnaldum’ in next Wednesday’s Europa League final against six-time champions Sevilla.
Dybala, who has scored 16 goals across all competitions this season, has been nursing an injury since April, while Wijnaldum picked up a knock in the quarter finals against Feyenoord and has been used sparingly ever since.
The final could be a vital game for Jose Mourinho’s side, as they look to win-back-to back European trophies following their victory in the Europa Conference League last season.
Winning the trophy would also confirm a Champions League place for a side that currently sit sixth in Serie A and four points off fourth place AC Milan.
The Dybala news is not good, though. Even if he does recover in time for the game, the 29-year-old will not have started a game for two months, meaning Mourinho will be unlikely to risk him in such a big match.
Paulo Dybala is an injury doubt for Roma’s Europa League final against Sevilla
Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is not ‘100% fit’ but may be tested in the league on Saturday
Jose Mourinho’s Roma side are looking to win a second European trophy in as many years against Sevilla next Wednesday
Things are more positive for Wijnaldum, with La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that he is not ‘100% fit’ but may be tested in Roma’s league game against Fiorentina on Saturday.
Whatever the outcome of Wednesday’s final, it has been an excellent run to the last two.
Having knocked out Real Socieded in the first knockout round, Roma then overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Feyenoord with a rollicking 4-1 win at home.
Mourinho trolled Dutch journalists in his typical fashion after the impressive turnaround, which came in a repeat of the previous year’s Conference final.
Roma edged past Bayer Leverkusen in a semi-final that yielded just one goal across two legs, but they will face their toughest test to date in the final.
Sevilla are the most successful side in the tournament’s history, and have already knocked out European giants Manchester United and Juventus.
Roma may be buoyed by the Spanish side’s league form, as they sit ninth in La Liga despite securing a top four finish in 2022.
