Real Madrid 1-1 Osasuna: Garcia hands champions their first slip-up

Real Madrid 1-1 Osasuna: LaLiga champions drop their first points of the campaign and surrender top spot to Barca as visitors hold on after Kike Garcia’s second-half equaliser despite late red card

  • Real Madrid slipped to second in LaLiga after enduring a 1-1 draw with Osasuna
  • Carlo Ancelotti’s side took the lead through Vinicius Jr shortly before half-time
  • Kike Garcia equalised in the 50th minute before Osasuna held on for the point
  • Barcelona climbed to first in the league moving above Madrid on goal difference

Real Madrid lost their 100 per cent record to Osasuna, and top spot in La Liga, to Barcelona, as former Middlesbrough forward Kike Garcia’s header cancelled out Vinicius’ first half goal.

Karim Benzema could have won it for Madrid from the penalty spot after David Garcia pushed him in the back inside the area but the Frenchman’s Sergio Herrera curse struck again.

The Osasuna keeper saved two Benzema spot-kicks last season and this time he watched as he penalty crashed off the crossbar.

Real Madrid dropped their first points of the season after a 1-1 home draw against Osasuna

Madrid had won all nine games played, including the Uefa Super Cup, but that run hit a brick wall with high-flying Osasuna worthy of their point.

Real Madrid started without Thibaut Courtois, missing with a Sciatic nerve problem. Stand-in Andriy Lunin was almost tested early on but after Barcelona loanee winger Abde Ezzalzouli jinked past Rodrgyo he sliced his shot wide.

Vinicius had Real Madrid’s first chance but his gentle shot was caught comfortably by Sergio Herrera.

Abde popped up on the right moments later and flashed a shot across the area. Osasuna were not fazed by their rivals in a even first half.

Vinicius Jr opened the scoring for Madrid as the champions went into half-time with a 1-0 lead

Benzema was back in Madrid’s starting line-up and his first chance came on minute 37 when he volleyed Vinicius’ ouside of the foot cross just wide of the far post. The Brazilian had run from the halfway line before providing the cross.

It was Vinicius who got the first goal when his cross shot went beyond everyone and beat Herrera.

Antonio Rudiger was offside but referee Guillermo Cuadra adjudged him not to have been interfering with play and the goal stood.

But Kike Garcia’s 50th minute equaliser quickly levelled the scoreboard in the second-half

Five minutes into the second half and Osasuna were level when Kike Gonzalo headed Unai Garcia’s cross over Lunin. He should have put his team ahead with Osasuna’s next attack but he put Moi Gomez’ cross wide from six yards out.

Carlo Ancelotti reacted immediately by throwing on Fede Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga. Dani Ceballos and Aurelien Thchouameni were the players who made way.

Madrid kept pushing and were given helpful push in the back on 78 minutes when David Garcia shoved Benzema over as he was about to score from four yards out. The defender was red-carded and the Frenchman took the penalty.

But the Herrera curse struck again. He saved two spot-kicks from Benzema last season and while this time he didn’t make the stop but the penalty came back off the crossbar.

Benzema thought he had scored in open play moments later but the flag was up against him and after a lengthy check the decision stood. Mariano Diaz was Ancelotti’s last throw of the dice, having already brought on Edu Militao and Marcos Asensio and ignored Eden Hazard.

Mariano stretched to reach yet another Vinicius cross but couldn’t connect and despite five minutes of added time there was no winning goal for Madrid.
