Ramsdale fuels Arsenal title push with ‘mental block’ comment after Man City win

Penalty hero Aaron Ramsdale claimed Arsenal have removed a ‘mental block’ to help them shoot down Manchester City after their Community Shield triumph.

The Gunners keeper was the spot-kick saviour as they came from behind to beat the Treble winners on penalties at Wembley. It was Arsenal’s first win over Pep Guardiola’s side since 2020 at the ninth attempt after City crushed Mikel Arteta ’s men in the Premier League title race last season.

But Ramsdale reckons this victory will inspire his side to take down the Blues in the big games this term. He said: “I’ll be honest as they are a bit behind us in their pre-season but what it is to us is a statement to us that we can go and beat them.

“It is a marker to know we can go and beat Man City in a big game when it matters. I’m not sure what it will be like going through the season but we know we have that mental block gone, as you might say.

“And we are ready to push on all season long.”

Ramsdale saved Rodri’s penalty in the shootout to tee up Fabio Vieira to score the winning spot kick. It was Leandro Trossard’s 101st minute equaliser to cancel out Cole Palmer’s superb strike which forced the shootout.

Guardiola was fuming with fourth official John Brooks after he held up the board for eight minutes added on, which was then extended because of a head clash between Kyle Walker and Thomas Partey. The City boss is not happy with the new rules being implemented by the PGMOL which will see more time added on for delays this season.

He said: “It's a good question for the international board and people because they don't consult with managers and players and we have to accept it with this amount of games.

“Now the games will be 100 minutes. Nothing happened today and it was eight minutes. They extend for goals. If you score 4-3 you put 45 seconds for seven goals, tomorrow morning at 9am I am [still] here playing.”
