Potential new Chelsea owner ‘close’ to Trump and has net worth bigger than Kim K

The latest potential new Chelsea owner is 'close' with Donald Trump and has a net worth more than double that of Kim Kardashian.

74-year-old American billionaire Woody Johnson is the latest person to express an interest in buying Chelsea from current owner Roman Abramovich.

ESPN report that the New York Jets owner has made contact with The Raine Group, who have been tasked with finding a new buyer for the club.

Abramovich, who has owned the Premier League giants since 2003, is looking to sell the club as he plans to cut ties in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Johnson is valued at £3billion, more than double the amount of reality star Kim Kardashian, who has a net worth of £1.4billion according to Forbes.

He is the heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune, with the pharmaceutical company currently valued at an eye-watering £330billion.

It is understood that he became a Chelsea fan during his time living in London between 2017 and 2021, having been made the US ambassador to the UK by Donald Trump.

Johnson has been a long-time supporter of Trump and is also a Republican Party donor.

Despite initially backing Trump's rival Jed Bush for the 2016 Republican Party nomination, he quickly switched his allegiances to support Trump and has heavily invested in both of his presidential campaigns.

In addition, Johnson's second wife Suzanne Ircha, whom he married in 2009, is best friends with Melania Trump.

Ircha is 20 years younger than her husband and the couple have two children together, whilst Johnson has three children from his first marriage with Nancy Sale between 1977 and 2001.

Trump thanked Johnson for his support by appointing him as his ambassador to the UK in 2017 after he assumed office, a role he held until last year.

Johnson is an avid sports fan, with courtside seats at the New York Knicks to go along with his ownership of the Jets NFL franchise.

He purchased the Jets in 2000 for £500million but his ownership has been much-maligned by the team's fans due to poor performances on the field.

Fans have turned on Johnson in the last five years, with banners and chants urging him to sell regular spotted at games in recent seasons.

This has not stopped Johnson from entering the race to buy Chelsea from Abramovich, though, following the Russian's confirmation he is looking to sell.

Abramovich is said to have offered the chance to buy the club to a host of billionaires and has set an initial asking price of £3billion.
